In May, I had the honor of photographing one of the most epic and colorful Hindu wedding celebrations in Brussels – the Sangeet of Elizabeth and Alexander. This joyous event was a beautiful fusion of East and West, embodying the rich cultural diversity of the couple. Elizabeth, a vibrant Texan, and Alexander, with roots both in Belgium and India, live in New York but chose to celebrate their wedding midway between their worlds, in the heart of Europe.
The Sangeet: A Night of Music and Dance
The Sangeet, traditionally a pre-wedding festivity in Hindu weddings, was nothing short of magical. Held at the stunning Concert Noble in Brussels, the room was adorned with chandeliers that reflected the golden tones of the decor, setting the stage for a night of colorful Indian dances, laughter, and music. Elizabeth, dressed in a radiant red lehenga, looked elegant and graceful as she mingled with family and friends. Alexander, in his traditional sherwani, radiated charm as the night unfolded with performances celebrating love, joy, and the coming together of families.
The word Sangeet translates to "sung together," and the evening lived up to its name, with guests joining in both choreographed and impromptu dances. From traditional Indian tunes to Western party songs, the energy in the room was electric, capturing the true essence of a Sangeet: vibrant, sumptuous, and joyful.
The Baraat: An Epic Parade Through the Streets of Brussels
One of the most memorable moments of the celebration was the Baraat, a grand procession that led the groom to the wedding venue. Alexander, mounted on a beautifully adorned white horse, made his entrance with an entourage of cheering guests. The streets of Brussels came alive with the sound of drums, and passersby were captivated by the vibrant scene unfolding before them. This traditional aspect of Hindu weddings, where the groom's arrival is met with much fanfare, was the perfect blend of joyful celebration and epic grandeur.
A Fusion of Traditions
As the night continued, the couple exchanged garlands in the traditional Indian jaimala ceremony, symbolizing their acceptance of one another as partners. The ceremony was a heartfelt moment of connection between their two worlds, and it brought the evening full circle, blending the best of Indian and Western traditions.
This colorful, joyful celebration of love in the heart of Brussels was a true testament to the couple’s rich heritage and their decision to honor both their cultures. As a wedding photographer, capturing such a sumptuous event was a privilege, and I’m grateful to have been part of their unforgettable journey.
